The Joy of the Lord

Sunday Morning Message by our Worship Pastor Anthony Counts

The Joy of the Lord
Philippians 1:3-11

Introduction:
 For joy in the Christian life, we must see that, “Its not about me. It’s about Christ and the Kingdom”.
 One key to experiencing joy is to move our attention from ourselves to the needs of others around us.

I. A Thought for Others (vs.3-6)
It should bring us great joy to see and know that God still works in the lives of fellow believers.

Salvation includes a three-fold work:
1. The work God does for us- Redemption
2. The work God does in us- Sanctification
3. The work God does through us- Service
Redemption, sanctification, and service are all necessary for deep, abiding joy.

II. A Heart for Others (vs.7-8)
Love is even said to be the evidence of salvation.

Let’s explore this love relationship between Paul and the Philippian church:
1. Paul was actually suffering on behalf of this church.
2. He considered his difficulties an opportunity.
3. Paul also documents their love for him.

The correct perspective is imperative:
 True joy is not experienced when our love is channeled through Christ.
 True joy is experienced when Christ’s love is channeled through us.

III. A Prayer for Others (vs.9-11)
Paul’s prayer for the church was for growth in three areas:
1. He prayed for their love to mature
2. He prayed that their character would be above reproach
3. He prayed that their service would be acceptable to God.

Conclusion:
If we have a single mind (living for Christ and the gospel), we will find that difficulties will strengthen the fellowship of the gospel and greatly increase our joy.
